Stack effect draws crawl space air upward into living areas through subfloor gaps and penetrations. Estimates suggest 30–50% of first-floor air in a vented crawl space home originates below the subfloor. Elevated crawl space spore counts mean elevated first-floor spore counts — which is why the musty smell from a crawl space problem is detectable in bedrooms and living rooms above.
